Assuring an enhanced data protection framework

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was formulated in 2016 and enforced in 2018 with the aim of safeguarding the privacy of individual users in the European Union (EU). The new law seeks to set a uniform standard for data protection laws across individual countries in the EU in order to ensure that consumer data is well-protected. The GDPR mandates organisations to implement a robust framework to protect the personal data of users. Companies that store or process personal information about EU citizens must comply with the GDPR, regardless of whether or not they function in the EU.

The legislation also specifies penalty levels up to ‘the higher of 4% of an enterprise’s worldwide turnover or €20m’, in cases of non-compliance. In addition, the law requires thorough privacy risk assessments to be conducted for new systems or technologies deployed in an organisation.
