AIS Mobile App Launched by Income Tax Department: Accessing Annual Information Statement (AIS) Made Easier

The Income Tax Department, through a press release dated March 22, 2023, has launched the “AIS for Taxpayer” mobile application, enabling taxpayers to conveniently access their Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) in a centralized digital format.

This development strengthens India’s move towards a more transparent and technology-driven tax compliance framework, allowing taxpayers to monitor financial transactions and reported income data in real time.

What is AIS and Why It Matters for Taxpayers

The Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a comprehensive financial record maintained by the Income Tax Department, capturing details such as income, investments, tax deductions, and high-value transactions.

With the introduction of the AIS mobile app, taxpayers now have easier access to this data, enabling better tracking, reconciliation, and validation of information before filing tax returns or responding to notices.

Key Features of the AIS Mobile App

    • Comprehensive Financial Data Access: View information related to TDS, TCS, interest income, dividends, share transactions, tax payments, and income tax refunds.
    • Integrated Data Sources: The app consolidates data from multiple reporting systems, including GST filings and foreign remittances.
    • Taxpayer Feedback Mechanism: Users can review and provide feedback on discrepancies or inaccuracies in reported data.

Such centralized visibility enhances the accuracy of reporting and supports better alignment with direct tax compliance requirements.

How to Register and Access the AIS Mobile App

To access the AIS mobile application, taxpayers are required to complete a simple registration process:

    1. Download the ‘AIS for Taxpayer’ app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
    2. Enter PAN and date of birth, accept terms, and proceed.
    3. Provide registered mobile number and email ID (as per the e-filing portal).
    4. Confirm details via OTP authentication.
    5. Set and confirm a 4-digit MPIN for secure access.

Users are allowed a maximum of five OTP attempts. Failure to authenticate within these attempts results in a temporary account lock for 24 hours.

Practical Relevance for Taxpayers and Businesses

The AIS mobile app is more than a convenience tool—it plays a critical role in ensuring data accuracy and minimizing compliance risks.

    • Helps identify mismatches between reported and actual income
    • Supports accurate income tax return filing
    • Enables proactive reconciliation before assessments

For businesses and professionals, aligning AIS data with financial records is increasingly important to ensure consistency across filings and avoid scrutiny. This becomes particularly relevant when integrating AIS data with broader corporate tax advisory and reporting frameworks.
