Advisory on Updates to E-Way Bill and E-Invoice Systems
Advisory issued by GSTN, effective Jan 2025
The Goods and Services Network (GSTN) brings in view the advisory announcing updated versions of E-Way Bill and E-Invoice Systems to be rolled out by NIC effective from 1st January 2025.
These updates are aimed at enhancing the security of the portals, in line with best practices and government guidelines.
The Updates aimed to be done are:
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) requires login using a username, password, and OTP (sent to the registered mobile number).
MFA will become mandatory in a phased manner starting January 1st, 2025 it will become mandatory for taxpayers with AATO (Aggregate Annual turnover) exceeding Rs 20 Crores, in next phase starting February 1st, 2025 for taxpayers with AATO exceeding 5 crores and eventually becoming mandatory for all taxpayers and users from April 1st, 2025. Currently, it is mandatory for taxpayers with AATO exceeding INR 100 Crores since 20th August 2023 and optional for those with AATO exceeding INR 20 Crores since 11th September 2023.
Restriction on E-Way Bill generation window.
The generation of E-Way Bills will be restricted to documents dated within 180 days from the
date of generation.
Restriction on E-Way Bill extension timeline.
The extension of E-Way Bills (validity) will be limited to 360 days from their original date of generation.
